Ladakh administration is exploring all forms of renewal energies available in the region to make the UT Atma Nirbhar in energy requirements and to become a supplier of clean energy to other states.
In two years of its existence, UT Ladakh Power Department is in advanced stage of execution of 500 crore rupees worth various power generation projects. 
With one MW Power Project by ONGC at Puga, Ladakh also set to be declared as the first state to explore geothermal energy, in the country by next year.
Similarly, an MOU signed recently to execute a 50 MW Solar Power Plant in Leh district with the Solar Energy Corporation of India and 5 MW Solar Power Plant at Zanaskar in Kargil district with CSF.
These are being developed under the Prime Minister Development Package. It is expected to bridge the gap of requirement of 40 MW during the winter months.
The process of replacement of present power supply through diesel in remote and difficult terrain villages with renewal energy like solar has begun.
So far, 17 out of existing 58 Diesel Generators have been replaced with Solar or hydro energies.
Assessment of solar hydrogen through NTPC in eastern Ladakh is being conducted.
