Adversities bring people closer and give newer meaning to humanity. Such is the story of Tariq Ahmad Patloo, a house boatman owner in Kashmir's Dal Lake. Patloo turned his houseboat into an emergency floating ambulance for the people living on the Dal lake.

Patloo’s floating ambulance comes equipped with PPE kits, stretchers, and a wheelchair like any other ‘normal ambulance’. The ambulance is the result of his own experience. Months back when he got infected with Covid-19 and had no one who could take him to the hospital.

Kashmir Valley has been reporting an increase in Covid-19 cases. The Union Territory is also under a strict lockdown to curb the spread of the virus.

In times like this, it is important that people in need receive the first help they can when in an emergency. Tariq has come to their rescue.

According to media reports, Patloo had to live in his houseboat for 20 days when was infected with the virus. This event inspired him to build an ambulance boat that would come to other’s help when in need.

Patloo shared his idea with the community’s chairman, after which, Patloo designed the ambulance all by himself in 20 to 25 days.

People usually think twice before lending a helping hand. However, Patloo’s floating ambulance does the opposite. He aims to help those who are in an emergency and in need of reaching the hospital timely.

His ambulance, a white sikara, not only looks like an ambulance but also has an ambulance-like siren and speaker facility for important announcements.

The act might not be big, but its impact will save lives. He may not look like a hero, but his thoughts and actions have made him one. As is said, ordinary men bring change by extraordinary grit.
